Taranaki's new downsized phone book is causing a stir and a New Plymouth's Judd Opticians is urging Yellow to re-think next year's edition.
Owner Andrew Judd, after speaking with staff optometrist Kath Collins, said the type was just too small.
He explained that the old phone book font, based on the chart optometrists use, was classified N8.
The new font is N6 which is, for people with 20/20 vision, manageable.
"But, it is small and for the majority of the demographic using the phone book, in other words seniors, it will be a struggle. It is too small."
Generally, from the age of 40, people will often begin to notice deterioration in sight. Many people have complained about the new font size.
"Young and old have spoken to the optometrist not only here at work but away from work," he said.
For users he suggested reading the book in well lit areas or buying a magnifying glass with a light. He also noted that a higher contrast between the print and paper, and a larger font, would help readers.
