Exam

Hey room 11,
I did a exam on Sunday the 19th of August.

My exam results were good because I got outstanding! And that is good that is the highest I could get and when you get outstanding  that means the next year you get to move up a class, so I was very proud of myself but I just want to say to Katy Kate and lots of other people that did their exam well done!

Yellow urged to rethink type size - Mid week Article

This is the article form the midweek about the issues around the new phone book. Andrew Judd also visited room 11 this week and talked about this. You can find the highlighted words in Extension list within spellingcity.com to practise - learn the meanings!!

Taranaki's new downsized phone book is causing a stir and a New Plymouth's Judd Opticians is urging Yellow to re-think next year's edition.
Owner Andrew Judd, after speaking with staff optometrist Kath Collins, said the type was just too small.
He explained that the old phone book font, based on the chart optometrists use, was classified N8.
The new font is N6 which is, for people with 20/20 vision, manageable.
"But, it is small and for the majority of the demographic using the phone book, in other words seniors, it will be a struggle. It is too small."
Generally, from the age of 40, people will often begin to notice deterioration in sight. Many people have complained about the new font size.
"Young and old have spoken to the optometrist not only here at work but away from work," he said.
For users he suggested reading the book in well lit areas or buying a magnifying glass with a light. He also noted that a higher contrast between the print and paper, and a larger font, would help readers.

Ben's Cross country.

Hi all,

The cross country is really cool.
It is a opportunity for people to give a long distance run a go.
The first year I wasn't really sure because it was a long way.
 But I did it.
And I came FIRST!!!!!The second year I came second and the 3rd year I came 3rd and last year I came first.
There is alot of great runners that run in my grade. All of them don't give up and do there best.Lots of people think that it would be really hard this year, but beleive me if you train and train and train you will get the outcome you wanted. It doesnt matter if you come last or anything it only matters if you have fun.
Here is a little tip: When you get a stich roll your shoulders a little bit and breath through you mouth then blow through your nose. That is what you sould do. Oh and make sure you congratlate everyone after the race cause they would of done a really  good job.
Hope you all will have a good job running a long long and another long way.

Aimee's thoughts on cross country!!

Cross Country - Aimee

On the 29 of August which is Wednesday which is tomorrow!!! We have the cross country. Last year I hurt my ankle on the big hill and so Mr Fleming helped me up.

Every time I go to cross country I get a sore tummy. Even today I have one, the day before the cross country.

But even so this year I am aiming to get better at cross Country

Cross Country! - Janelle

I  like  running  at  Cross  Country!

It is a racing tomorrow at school!

It is fun at Cross Country!

Cross country! - Courtney

Tomorrow is cross country the 29th of August and the most bubbly day of school for me.
I love cross country and looking forward to running at Frances Douglas.

I always feel so nervous at cross country standing at the starting line staring at my enemy KATE!
I feel nervous because I always think I am going to come 1st for the first time and then crossing the line for the first time coming 1st but then I try and paste myself and use the tips that Kate gave me but one day I will achieve my goal.
In class we are great friends but at the starting line we are great enemy's!
When the blocks snap together I make a run for it.

When I first came to this school I came 3rd, all the rest of my years I have came 2nd waiting for someday to beat  Kate.
I always have butterfly's in my tummy on cross country and always trying to beat my goal but I have never achieved it but hopefully I will tomorrow.
I also love running in the cross country it is fun and people have time to use there energy in stead of using it in class.
It also makes you very fit running up a great big hill.

Courtney.

Tomorrows Cross Country

Tomorrow is Cross Country Its on the 29th of August. I do not like cross country because...... The Track is so long,Its boring and it is really really really TIRING!!!!!! I am not much of a runner though anyway. People out there are not much of runners run hard and finish the race it doesn't matter if you come 1st 2nd or 3rd It matters that you finish the race and go back home and have a nice relaxing bath to have energy for tomorrow. Oh yeah and one more thing last year I came 5th everyone else that was in front of me were having a battle who was first but it dosen't really matter.

Bye Bye and by the way you will never beat Usains Bolts record He is the fastest man in the world.

Eid

As I did a post on Ramadan, I'm going to do one about Eid.
This is the festival after Ramadan when you have fast all day (More info? scroll down)
This Eid was quite fun. Eid is like Christmas, People get together and give presents to each other.
At first we went to the mosque and had the Eid prayer. After that we all greeted each other saying "Eid Mubarak" probably meaning Happy Eid. Me and some of my friends that go to the mosque to learn about Islam sang 3 songs. It was quite embarrassing. Then we went straight home to set up all the plates and cook the rest of the food because after the prayer people were coming to our house to talk and give presents to each other. Now we had to go to Adrita's house (My friend) to have some more food and play. Last but not least we went to Pho Pho's house (also my friend) and then ate dinner there.

Thats the end of Eid!

Ramadan

Ramadan is a month. In this month we fast. Fasting means not eating. Breakfast is basically breaking fast. This monthe is in the hijary calendar. This calendar is the calendar most muslim people use. According to the hijary calendar we are in year 1433 but in the gregorian calendar we are in 2012.

As am muslim I also do fasting. because I am small and not an adult yet so I only fast on Saturdays and Sundays. To fast you have to wake up at 5.00 and have Seheri. This is when you have food before fasting. After the seheri there is no more time to eat and the fasting begins, this is quite annoying but I do it for good.

We do this because God wants us to know how the people in Africa and India and other poverty stricken places live. This teaches muslims to be happy for what we've got and we aren't one of those starving people in Africa and India.

My trip to Bangladesh

As most of you guys know, that quite while ago, I went to Bangladesh again to attend Tonima (My cousin) and Salman's wedding. Me and my mum left on the 21 June and had stayed there for 3 weeks but I did miss my dad who we had to leave behind. There was nine events.

First there was the bridal shower. (I will probably present this you guys in class so then I will explain what some of you probably won't understand.)

Then there was an event where you put hena on, in Bengali you call it "Me-hi-di" Tonima and Salman both had it... These are photos of Tonima's "Me-hi-di"

When we went to Salman's "Me-hi-di" We made Tonima go in a disguise. Because usually the bride is not allowed to attend the groom's events. So we disguised Tonima as one of my grandmother's friend, but sadly the groom recognised her the first time she came in!

Now it was Tonimas's holud.

Some of my relatives and I danced at her holud.

Salman also came.

Now it was Salman's holud.

Tonima was sick of coming disguised so she just went as herself.

Now was the signing of the papers that actually makes them officially married. But sadly I dont have any pictures for this event. So how many events so far...I think about 6, 3 to go!

Now is the wedding. :D

I wore a Sari...
(the person beside me is my cousins wife.)

And that is my mum's cousin.

The ceremony has begun...

Last but not least. The paint fight. We used powdered paint.

(On the left is my cousin)

So thats it. I'll explain alot more stuff in class. Hope you liked my short summary of my trip.

Pipsqueak/Arron.

When I was 8 I had a guinea pig called Pipsqueak. I got a cage for her. About 3 weeks she got her legs under the cage. When I saw her I went in to the cage and got her out,I rushed inside, got a cloth, rapped the cloth around her, got the keys and said. "man come on pipsqueak is hurt". Just get in and drive. "I'll tell you on the way". I gave mum the keys and we started to drive to the vet. "Ok". "I'll tell you now. When I went outside to move the cage to a new patch of grass I saw Pipsqueak and saw that her feet were red". Straight after telling mum we got to the vet. I said "quick get in side". When we got inside I thought Pipsqueak would be so scared and so was I when the vet told me that she had no pulse I........ Fainted!!!! Bang straight on the floor. When I got up the vet told me that Pipsqueak died in my arms. I was happy that she didn't suffer and she died in her owners arms. When I got home I started to cry so hard. When I stopped crying we went outside by the plum tree and dug a hole and put her in the hole By all our other pets.

Bridges will open up Te Henui Walkway

This weeks Newspaper article - check out the vocabulary to explore on spellingcity.com
Extension List 4

Bridges will open up Te Henui Walkway

New Plymouth's most popular inland walkway is finally to get a $500,000 makeover to open it up to people unable to negotiate steps.
The Te Henui Walkway is to have two new pedestrian bridges built across the river this summer as part of the New Plymouth District Council's Let's Go project.
The bridges will bypass the hillside beside Spencer Pl, near the historic Pukewharangi Pa.
"The stairs will remain as an alternative route, but the two bridges will mean people can travel the length of the Te Henui Walkway without encountering steps," Let's Go project manager Carl Whittleston said.
The narrow and hilly section is impossible for anyone in wheelchairs and difficult going for anyone with a pushchair, pram or bicycle. Work will start in November and should be finished by February.
The project will be funded by the Government (61 per cent) and the New Plymouth District Council through the $3.7 million national walking and cycling money won by the council in 2010.
The bypass route was a long time coming after first being mooted four years ago, Mr Whittleston said. Planning had involved talks between the Historic Places Trust, the hapu Ngati Tuparikino, Ngati Tawhirikura and Ngati Te Whiti, the Department of Conservation and other interested parties.
Friends of Te Henui co-ordinator Valda Poletti - owner of the nearby Te Kainga Marire, a garden of national significance - was thrilled with the development. "These bridges will not only improve access for those who live on the mountain side of Pukewharangi Pa but they'll also preserve the bush remnant from Spencer Place, which would have been compromised if the existing path had instead been widened or had ramps installed to replace the steps."

Natalias House!

I went to Natalias house on last Friday!
It was fun!
We played The Legend of SPYRO Dawn of the dragon on the Playstation 2 and then we played Happy feet on the Playstation 2 after!
We saw Cinnamon Natalias kitten but then he ran under her grandmothers bed!
Then we saw Odie Natalias grandmothers kitten!
Then we saw Vincent the cat!
Then we played Don't touch the water on the trampoline!
Then we trained Cinnamon to sit!
Then I picked up Cinnamon!
Then Natalia and her dad took me home!

Hunters Holiday in Queensland

Last week, I (Hunter) went to Queensland witch in in the south island of New Zealand. It is really cold. The first day of my holiday I went in a plane to Christchurch and then on aother plane to Queenstown.
We rented a car from a car shop (i don't really know the name of the rental place so I will call it the car shop).
From the airport we traveled to  our hotel, it was really flash, it was called Spinniker bay. It was about 5:00 at night so I decided to go to bed early from a tireing day. The second day...WE WENT SKIING!!!
It was soooo much fun (even though I face planted a bit). We were there for a whole day. At the end of the day we went back to our hotel and whached T.V...
our legs were sore from having so much fun!

The next day we just rested from our long skiing day. We decided to do somthing differant tomorrow.
We went shopping and I didn't get anything but my mum and sister brought heaps!
It was night once again and the adults wanted to get away from us for abit and go out with some friends called Bungi (he is a professoional stunt man) and his wife.
We got a baby sitter, she was really nice, her name was Camille.
We hade so much fun together we went to the pool, we hade tickle fights (i always won!), and after that we settled down and whacthed some movies!
The adults came back a 1:00 in the morning.

The nextday we didn't go skiing, but we went on a ship!
It was called the TSS Earnslaw it was celebrating its 100th annaversry (it was a steamboat).
It was sailng to a farm. We got to see deer, bulls, sheep, sheep shearing and herding dogs.
It was lots of fun wew got to feed all the animals!
They slobbered all over my hand!
Then we sailed back to port again.
It was 4:00 when we got back and we had all had a great day!
So we decided to go back to the hotel and have a swim.
The rest of the afternoon we swam and read books and watched movies together.
I made the fire so we could all get snug and warm.
We talked about what we should do tomorrow and we all wanted to go skiing again because after all thats why we came on this holiday.

So the next day, like we decided, went skiing we screamed as we zoomed down the mountain!
The next day was our last to do anything because we were leaving on the next day!
So mum planned a surprise day for us, I had a feeling it was going to be awesome, mum seemed excited.
So the next day mum took us to the surprise, turns out it was a JET! it was called KJet it went super fast on 10 centermetre water called shotover river...we only needed to use 5 cm of that water!
We did 360s in the water and I got SOAKED!!!
At the end of the ride there is a aqurium underneath and you can go in for free!
You can see all the fish in the lake through the glass!
The trought were HUGE!
You could put 1 dollar into the machine and fish food would go into the water and feed the fishes!
After that we went on this thing called skyline were you go in a little box thing on a wire and go to the top of a mountain.
At the top there is a activitie called the luge, its like bumper cars, go-karts and racecar driving all in one!

I went on that bet every one!
Then we went down on the skyline again and to the bottom.
That was the end of our holiday as we went on the plane and back to New plymouth!

Carrie's Concert

SHOW STOPPERS: Dave Dobbyn performs Slice of Heaven at the Taranaki Cathedral Church of St Mary during Carrie’s Concert – a fundraiser for CanTeen and the Child Cancer Foundation. From left he is joined by Kate, Katy , Chloe  (partly obscured), Carrie and Danii.

People flocked to church on Saturday night but it was pop music not preaching that pulled the crowds.
Kiwi musician Dave Dobbyn performed before a capacity crowd of more than 500 at the Taranaki Cathedral Church of St Mary.
The event, called Carrie's Concert, was a fundraiser for CanTeen and the Child Cancer Foundation. More than $7000 was estimated to have been collected.
The organiser, Carrie Allen, 12, approached Dobbyn as part of her honours programme at Devon Intermediate.
Tickets for the event sold out a week in advance, and seating was at a premium.
Extra chairs were brought in and placed alongside wooden pews.
A stage extended out from the altar and those attending included families, cathedral parishioners, MP Jonathan Young and New Plymouth Mayor Harry Duynhoven.
A host of support acts included the Devon Intermediate kapa haka group, Frankley School choir, a choir from New Plymouth Girls' High School, young ballet dancers and members of the Agape youth group.
Joining Dobbyn on stage was New Plymouth musician Victoria Girling-Butcher, along with Haddon Smith and Ross Burge.
During the evening, those affected by last week's Paritutu rock climbing tragedy were remembered.
Dobbyn summed up the sombre mood when he expressed his hope that families and friends of the victims would find some comfort.
It wasn't all serious stuff. On stage Dobbyn was chatty and relaxed, sharing anecdotes and happily singing the former top-rating Slice of Heaven with a group of school students.
Speaking after the concert Girling-Butcher said Dobbyn was moved by the experience.
“It was really meaningful for him.
"Taranaki is dear to him. He's spent a little bit of time at Parihaka and appreciates the region's history and beauty.”
She said Dobbyn was also blown away by the strength and composure of Carrie Allen, who is affected by a rare cancer called rhabomyosarcoma.
Girling-Butcher said the only other time she had performed inside the cathedral was as a youngster taking part in an arts festival event.
She said Saturday's event was “poignant” for her.
“I love working with Dave, so to perform with him for a special event in my home town was quite meaningful.”
Jamie Allen, Taranaki Cathedral's dean, said it was a night no-one would forget.
He thanked Dobbyn's agent Lorraine Barry as well as the band and businesses, organisations and individuals who had volunteered their time and services for the evening.

“They played so beautifully and lovingly . . . especially in this week of profound tragedy in our community.
"Your song - and all those who took part - brought us hope and light. Perhaps nobody but Dave could have got this so right.”

Student pedals to give kids a chance - Taranaki Daily News

Adventurous Taranaki student Christine Conway is taking the long road home to New Plymouth - stopping off in the Himalayas for a charity cycle en route from England.
The 23-year-old will cycle 700km over 16 days as part of the annual "India on 2 Wheels" event organised by UK charity Childreach International.
Miss Conway graduated from Sacred Heart Girl's College in 2007 and is in the United Kingdom completing an MA in conflict, security and development.
She flies to Delhi to start the journey with 15 other students later this month.
"I have never done anything like this before and wouldn't consider myself a cyclist. But I have been putting the hours in for training and am sure I can do it," she said.
To take part in the cycle, Miss Conway has had to come up with $5000 on top of costs for flights, a $500 registry fee and other expenses.
Money raised goes to Childreach International to help needy children in Tanzania, India, Nepal, Pakistan, Cambodia and Bangladesh. It will improve children's access to healthcare, education and protection.
"I was really inspired by Childreach International as they are such a new charity but they've already achieved so much," she said.
"They raise most of their funds through these charity challenges which they promote to students."
To fundraise for the journey, Miss Conway has had street collections, bake sales, fundraising pub crawls and organised Amazing Race style competitions.
She has also sold unwanted possessions.
"I believe everyone deserves a chance and am really happy to be assisting with projects that give children a chance in life," she said.
After the cycle, Miss Conway will volunteer at a Tibetan refugee centre as a human rights consultant and English teacher before flying home on September 23.
You can support Christine's journey on her Facebook page www. facebook.com/christinedoesindia on2wheels

The highlights of my weekend.

On Friday I went to stay at Jackson's house to stay saturday. When we woke up in the morning my bed was uncoftable because my pillow fell off. Meanwhile we had breakfast and went to soccer to watch Jackson's step brother play. Jackson climbed up a big tree when we were there. after a while we went back to their house and had some noodles and watched a movie called Napolean it was a very scary and sad and happy story. After that we had lunch - stack pie and chips. Then we just chilled out and when the time came I went home. I had a great highlight weekend I rate it.......10/10!

We haven't had it for 8 weeks because the whole side had to be replaced because of water bubbles on the side. Me and mum got really annoyed because we wanted to go away in it in the holidays but we couldn't sad!!!! I hope we get to bring home some car parts to get our go kart going sweeeet.
