ZAPPED!

Zapped-I am going to rewrite the play Zapped....... One day there was a girl and her classmates and she had got given a calculater from her grandad, her grandad told her not to press the off button while it is facing someone. Along came her friend and asked her about the calcultaer so she told him, one of the things that she said was she can't press the off button while facing someone and he said why not and so she zapped someone and they turned into a statue! Then she zapped everyone and he kept on and on at something and so she zapped him! Then she felt lonly so she unzapped Jack (her friend) and she said to him I want to go for a game of soccer so With that the teacher came in and said time for spelling testing. With that Jack said zapp the teacher so then she did and they all went out for a game of soccer! Produced by Courtney.

Astounding Tree

Astounding Tree

This tree is an astounding tree. It's just lived for 1000’s of years undiscovered until now. The information you are about to lay your eyes on will astound you.  But, every word you read will make you, think harder about what lives out in the bush and how they live.

The secrets that you are about to lay your eyes on will be exciting but I warn you reader some of these secrets may change your life forever. This is my lifes work.

If you don’t already know what I am talking about, I am talking about the Swamp Marie.

It has breathing roots from the top and eating roots at the bottom. It has white scaly bark on the tree and its leaves die on top so birds and other things do not eat it.

It’s been drained, cut down and used for cargo crates and butter containers because it did not rot and stink. So now it is a tree that everyone wants to protect so it’s not lost to this world. That is my conclusion.

Football Ferns open Olympics action with loss

Hi all, this is the article on the pre-Olympics football match between our Ferns and the UK team. The highlighted words are in Extension List 2 on spellingcity.com for you to explore.

Like his players, Football Ferns coach Tony Readings preferred to accentuate the positives after their 1-0 loss to Britain in the Olympic Games opener at Millennium Stadium today (NZT). It's probably all he could do after the disappointing start to their camapign, but the most comforting factor for the coach was a belief in his team to bounce back. That will be a tough ask, though, with world No 5 Brazil next up on Sunday (NZT). "What we have proved time and time again is that when we come up against adversity we always react in the best way possible," he said from the bowels of Cardiff's magnificent rugby stadium. "What they will know is that today was a missed opportunity and I think we will use that to our advantage, because we know we weren't completely outplayed for the 90 minutes." Readings felt they should have got something out of the game, though most objective observers would say they were outplayed on balance. The 1-0 scoreline certainly didn't flatter the hosts. "I think we have a lot of positives to take from the performance today," he said. "We had a few chances there as well, that's one game down and we have two more games to get six points, which is what we are aiming for." Readings said the players were disappointed, devastated even, which was a sign of of far they had come in the past five years. "That feeling is because we have lofty expectations, we expect to win these games. We expect to progress out of the group and take it from there." The coach was rapt with his team's start - they dominated the first 15 minutes against a nervous British side - but once the hosts pressed forward, the Ferns struggled to keep possession. "As they got into the game and the crowd got noisier, it lifted their team," he said. "Maybe if we could have scored in the first 20-25 minutes when we were on top, the game could have taken a different route. But we didn't and we need to learn from that and to take advantage from phases when we are on top. "GB started to press us more and we didn't move the ball as quickly as we did earlier in the match and it allowed them to get on top. We will just keep playing the way we set out to play." He said the free kick, which led to the 64th minute winner from defender Stephanie Houghton, could have been defended better - "it felt like the ball went in the net quite easily'' - but other factors had contributed to the loss. Ad Feedback He also refused to put too much emphasis on striker Sarah Gregorius' glaring miss, in the 71st minute, when a defensive botch up saw her one-on-one but she scuffed the shot at the keeper. "There's a whole heap of things we could have done better and she's missed an opportunity but the players will rally around, and by Brazil she will look to put things right in the next game. "She's a pretty unique character. She's one of the bubbliest personalities in the camp." New Zealand will need to beat Brazil or, more likely, Cameroon in the final pool match next Wednesday if they are to have any chance to progressing to the quarterfinals in the 12-team competition.

'Killers' warning over dolphins - Newspaper article

The highlighted words can be found in our spellingcity lists. These words can be used by those children who would benefit from discussing their meanings and working on the activities that help this. Have a look.

Protection must immediately be given to Maui's dolphins in Taranaki waters or New Zealand's fishing fleet risks being branded "dolphin killers", an academic warns.
Otago University zoology professor Liz Slooten has been studying Maui's dolphins and their South Island counterpart Hector's dolphins, since 1984.
Just 55 adult Maui's are believed to exist off the North Island's west coast and new rules to protect them come into force at the end of the month.
Set netting will be banned within 3.7 kilometres of shore and commercial fishing boats must carry observers if they wish to use set nets between there and 12.6km.
Fishermen claim the new measures are unnecessary but conservationists so they don't go far enough.
Yesterday Prof Slooten said there was more awareness about the plight of the world's rarest marine mammal issue overseas than here.
Failing to take action to prevent the Maui's extinction could see the international community boycott New Zealand fish in protest.
"Logically it doesn't make sense for people to boycott hoki, for instance, because dolphins aren't being killed in the hoki industry but that is the next step. Do we want to be seen as dolphin killers overseas," she said.
Despite some fishermen claiming Maui's did not live in Taranaki waters, Prof Slooten said past sightings showed they did and if those sightings were no longer happening it was only because the population had declined so much.
She said it was now so small it could afford just one death every 10 to 23 years and with set nets by far the biggest threat to Maui's dolphins fishermen must look at alternatives.
But Taranaki Commercial Fishermen's Association president Ian McDougall said four boats currently used set nets and there was no suitable alternative when targeting valuable rig, warehou and trevally stocks.
"Warehou don't take bait and you can't catch rig on a commercial scale with long lines," he said.
Quota restrictions, market demand and conversion costs also meant fishermen could not simply switch to long lining for different species such as gurnard and snapper.
In January, Mr McDougall reported he had caught a Hector's or Maui's dolphin in his set net off Cape Egmont. As required by law he returned the dolphin to the sea.
In April a dead Hector's dolphin was washed up near Opunake.
Taranaki Commercial fishermen will today meet a representative of the Ministry for Primary Industries to discuss the implications of placing observers on their boats.

A Marmite Miracle

It is a miracle.
On Sunday 8th of July when we were unpacking our food cupboard at our bach,
We discovered that we had 1 250 gram jar of marmite.
We couldn’t believe as nobody has been able to get it for the last few months due to the marmite factory being in the red zone from the Christchurch earthquake. I think that we are very lucky to have it and we have to make it last until the factory can reopen and start to make Marmite again.

Pink Attack.

Today (12th July 2012) I went up Mt Ruapehu with my 2 sisters and my Mum to ski on the Whakapapa ski field. We had a great time and we also skied on Tuesday 10th July. Today I had a lesson with an instructor called Alex and he was very kind. For Cxthristmas last year I got new skis from USA and they have fluro pink bottoms. I am still getting used to having them but I really like the look of them. Also today when I got out of bed and came upstairs my Mum told me that I needed new pants so she went into the ski gear cupboard and pulled out some bright pink snow pants. I was amazed at how bright they were. Once I got dressed into all of my gear I noticed that I was wearing all pink except for my red ski boots. After we had driven up to the ski field I got in my skis and Mum took a photo of me and I told to her “Pink Attack” Here is a photo of me in all of my gear up the mountain.
